5 Tips for an Acne-Free Summer

What remind you of summer? The beach and swimming, the ripe and juicy fruits, or the colorful and tasty ice creams? Summer means pleasure and enjoyment for many people, but it can also be unfriendly to some others. Heat, humidity, and sweat can bring oily skin and cause acne. What can you do to prevent acne breakouts?

  1. Clean Your Face, but Not Too Often

Your oil glands often get excited in a hot and humid environment. When overactive, they will process too much oil. Although you cannot stop oil secretion, you can wash your face with a foam cleanser twice a day to remove the excessive oil. However, washing too much may result in dry skin and irritation, which will worsen acne breakouts.


  1. Use a Good Sunscreen

Sunburns are the inflammation of the skin that can trigger acne breakouts. Also, many acne medications make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Therefore, a noncomedogenic, oil-free sunscreen is a must during summer.


  1. Wash Away Your Sweat

Sweat can irritate acne, and the waste it carries may block pores and feed bacteria that cause acne. So you will want to hit the shower after working out, or at least you should wash your face, neck, or anywhere you are prone to have acne.


  1. Change Your Diet

Yep, the diet has to do with everything. All health problems have a connection with the diet. People often tend to have more sugary drinks, alcoholic beverages, and snack foods during the summer months, but this habit does no good for acne. Sugary or high-glycemic foods cause a spike in insulin levels, which will lead to excessive oil on the skin and acne breakouts. Fruits are better choices if you crave sweet food.


  1. Stay Hydrated

Hydration has two parts. One is to drink more water, and the other is to moisturize your skin. It may sound counter intuitive, but oily skin does not mean hydrated skin. In fact, dehydration can result in increased oil production and, in turn, acne breakouts. Drinking enough water combined with a lightweight moisturizer will ensure a moisturized skin and body.
