Solfeggio Frequencies: A Primer on the Sacred Sounds of Healing

Solfège vs Solfeggio frequencies: a brief history

“If you want to find the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”

Nikola Tesla

Let’s delve into one of those secrets of the Universe: Solfeggio frequencies. If you’re a musician, you might say that “Solfeggio” looks a lot like “Solfège”:  a pitch recognition method which became the scale of notes you have to learn in music class. However, if you’re someone seeking a physical, emotional or spiritual boost, you’ll turn to Solfeggio frequencies to fine tune yourself. While their stories are intertwined, Solfège and Solfeggio are not quite the same, so before we dive into the world of Solfeggio, let’s try to clear up the confusion.

What is known as Solfège can be traced well before its oft-cited 11th century Benedictine roots, when Guido D’Arezzo created a musical scale that could be easily taught to his fellow monks for use in Gregorian chants. These tones are actually said to go back to King David and the Psalms and were possibly used as well in the Vedic Books of ancient India. In both cases, the tones were applied to texts in a way to enhance the spiritual and healing experience when reading them aloud. In the same way, through its five-note scale, medieval Gregorian chants transcended music into a spiritual healing practice.

Using Pythagoras’ discoveries on the harmony of spheres, a sixth note was added later on. The scale was completed in the 16th century, but mysteriously disappeared soon after. Some say the Solfeggio scale was simply abandoned for a new music scale, others argue that it disappeared among the political and religious turmoil of Western Europe’s Middle Ages. Whatever the cause, the six-tone Solfeggio scale, also known as “Just Intonation”, was replaced by the “Twelve-Tone Equal Temperament”, which is what we still use today to teach music, but has no benefit to our well-being. As such, the healing component was lost for centuries, and what remained was a global method for the systematic teaching of music.

Enter Dr. Joseph Puleo, a naturopathic physician and researcher in the 1970s who rediscovered the healing properties of Solfeggio frequencies.

While studying the Bible, Dr. Puleo noticed a series of repeating patterns in the Book of Numbers that he believed corresponded to a six-tone scale, similar to the original Solfège scale. Using a technique called Pythagorean reduction, he identified six electromagnetic sound frequencies corresponding to the tones of the ancient Solfège scale: 396 Hz, 417 Hz, 528 Hz, 639 Hz, 741 Hz, and 852 Hz. He noted that these frequencies stimulated the brain to promote healing and well-being.

Dr Puleo’s research and his discoveries about these tones would eventually lead him to co-author the best-seller The Healing Codes of Biological Apocalypse with Dr Leonard G Horowitz, thus popularizing frequency medicine.

What are these Solfeggio frequencies?

Here are the 6 original Solfeggio frequencies, rediscovered by Dr Puleo in the 1970s:

  • 396 Hz: The first is thought to help liberate us from feelings of guilt and fear, which is arguably one of the biggest obstacles we face in life.
  • 417 Hz: The second helps with the undoing of situations and facilitating change in our lives. It is said to alleviate the conscious and subconscious mind from traumatic past experiences.
  • 528 Hz: Thethird is perhaps the most famous of the frequencies, because of its reputation for creating profound transformation and miracles. It has even been linked to the repair of human DNA, the most basic building blocks of our bodies and minds.
  • 639 Hz: Thefourth is said to improve our connection and relationships with the people around us. This includes healing strained relationships and creating new ones.
  • 741 Hz: Thefifth is connected to expression and solutions, helping us open up and share our gifts with the world more fully.
  • 852 Hz: Thesixth and final of the original notes, returns us to spiritual order, improving our access to the spiritual realm, our authentic self, and higher consciousness.

Dr. Puleo later added what is known as the 3 Modern Solfeggio Frequencies to the scale:

  • 174 Hz: This is associated with pain reduction and anesthetic properties.
  • 285 Hz: This is associated with cellular repair (tissue restoration), body regeneration and improved immunity.
  • 963 Hz: This is associated with spiritually awakening and connecting to the “oneness” of the Universe.

As you can see, the known benefits of exposure to Solfeggio frequencies range from the physical (lowered blood pressure, improved sleep, DNA repair…) and the mental/emotional (stress relief, increased focus, recovery from trauma…) to the spiritual (human connection, sense of peace, greater clarity…). It’s a wellness tool for the body, mind and soul.

Create Your Own Solfeggio Frequency Combinations

Each of the 9 Solfeggio frequencies works beautifully on its own, but many people prefer to combine multiple frequencies for a more personalized experience. For example, you may wish to listen to 528 Hz for transformation and healing while pairing it with 174 Hz for grounding and pain relief. To make this easy, we’ve created a free Online Frequency Generator that allows you to combine up to 7 frequencies at once into a single customized audio track. You can adjust the frequencies to match your personal intention, listen online, or download your unique combination for later use.

If you’d like to explore how different Solfeggio frequencies feel when used together, you’re warmly invited to try our free tool here:

This multiple tone generator allows you to enter any number of frequencies which can then be played simultaneously. The tones can be one of the following waveforms: sine, square, sawtooth and triangle.

Are Solfeggio frequencies tied to the Chakras?

For those who are new to this realm, Chakras are energy centers within the human body, as described in various Eastern traditions, particularly within yoga and Ayurveda. The term “Chakra” comes from the Sanskrit word meaning “wheel”, so you can imagine 7 spinning wheels running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each Chakra resonates at a specific frequency and vibrational level. When these energy centers are aligned and balanced, individuals experience vibrant health and emotional stability.

Seven Chakra and Solfeggio

The relationship between the Chakras and Solfeggio frequencies is profound yet intricate. As you can see in the above diagram, each Chakra is believed to vibrate at its unique frequency that corresponds with a specific Solfeggio tone. While certain Solfeggio frequencies work on a more physical plane, all the Chakras work on a more emotional/spiritual plane. But as the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of our being are intricately woven together, there will be overlap between Solfeggio frequencies and the Chakras. Thus, integrating Solfeggio frequencies into your meditations makes sense.  To integrate these frequencies for maximum impact, make yourself comfortable in a calm environment, choose the frequency that corresponds to the Chakra you wish to work on, and while you’re listening, engage in breathwork, focusing on the color of that Chakra, and bathing yourself in its glow.

How do Solfeggio frequencies work?

Solfeggio frequencies aren’t “woo-woo”: there is a growing body of scientific research that explores the impact of sound and frequency on the human body and mind.

Sound, as we know it, is a form of energy that travels through waves. These waves have different frequencies, and each frequency corresponds to a specific wave pattern. When we listen to music or any other sound, our ears detect the vibrations in the air and convert them into electrical signals that reach the brain. These vibrations occur in a rhythmic pattern, with each sound having a specific frequency. Different frequencies can have varying effects on brain activity, emotions, and even physical health. For example, lower frequencies, such as those found in deep meditation music, have been found to promote relaxation and stress reduction. These frequencies resonate with the body, helping to calm the nervous system. On the other hand, higher frequencies, like those found in upbeat and energetic music, can increase alertness and focus. These frequencies stimulate the brain, enhancing cognitive function and promoting a sense of wakefulness.

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Research has also explored the therapeutic potential of specific frequencies in addressing various health conditions, from pain and wounds to autism and fibromyalgia, just to name a few. More and more studies are reporting positive outcomes in using these frequencies. Here is an excellent video that covers the science of Solfeggio frequencies.

How to integrate Solfeggio frequencies into self care routine?

Knowing that Solfeggio frequencies are tied to sound, it seems only logical to listen to music that has these frequencies. Go to Spotify or YouTube: you won’t be disappointed by the choice. It’s advisable to download what you like to ensure an ad-free, uninterrupted experience. Select a volume that’s comfortable to you as background music. Ideally, listen to these frequencies in a calm setting with minimal distractions, but don’t beat yourself up if you can’t. Make it something within your reach: during your morning or bedtime ritual, when you’re walking the dog, or while you’re journaling or studying. You don’t have to be in a lotus position to “get it right”. You can listen for a few minutes or all day long, but it’s important to create a consistent routine.

While there is no specific protocol for listening to Solfeggio frequencies, consistency really is important. To experience the greatest long-term benefits, try to get in at least three 15-minute sessions a week for four to six weeks. You can focus on one frequency or play the entire spectrum. This is an excellent opportunity to be proactive in your own well-being, and this requires a little introspection. What needs your attention? What needs to be tweaked? What needs to be enhanced? Are there any personal or spiritual goals that you wish to reach? Let the Solfeggio frequencies help you out. However, if you’re still lost, here are some suggestions to help you weave Solfeggio frequencies into your daily life:

Solfeggio Morning Rituals

Meditation
Begin your day with a morning meditation session accompanied by a specific Solfeggio frequency track, like 528 Hz (for transformation). It doesn’t have to be long: even 10 minutes is fine. Sit quietly, close your eyes, and focus on your breath, and let the sounds penetrate into your inner being.

Affirmations
Listen to 639 Hz music while you’re getting ready for your day. Look into the mirror with gratitude for who you are, and say one or several affirmations about yourself. This will reinforce self-love, which will spill over to those you interact with during the day.

Solfeggio during the day

Focused Listening Sessions
Create a playlist featuring various Solfeggio tracks tailored for concentration (like 741 Hz). Play this softly in the background while you work or study. This ambient soundscape helps block distractions while promoting clarity of thought.

Break Time Reflection
During breaks, take a moment to listen to soothing tracks such as 417 Hz or 852 Hz. Focus on the accomplishments you’ve made so far that day and a give yourself a pat on the back. If there have been any negative occurrences during the day, ask yourself how you can be thankful for them (Did you learn anything from that experience? Has it helped you to improve yourself? Did it help you define boundaries?).

Solfeggio evening down time

Dinner time
Play 639hz soft and low in the background to create a peaceful ambiance at dinner time. Try not to plan any activities too close to the dinnertime window so people aren’t in a rush to eat and run.

Relaxation Techniques
Set aside time in the evening for gentle yoga or stretching sessions while playing Solfeggio music (like 396 Hz). The combination of movement and sound promotes relaxation and helps release tension accumulated throughout the day.

After-dinner wind down
Solfeggio frequencies are excellent for quiet evening activities. Read a few pages of your favorite book with 852hz in the background before going to bed.

A new way to incorporate Solfeggio frequencies into your life

You don’t have to be wearing a headset to benefit from Solfeggio frequencies. They have been incorporated into certain Rife and Scalar devices that allow these frequencies to envelope your bio-energetic field and penetrate the entire body with vibrational information for true healing and balance.

There are two advantages to using such devices:

First is you’re not activating auditory stimuli…and all the subjectivity that surrounds it. So you’re not wasting energy analyzing and judging the sound. There are plenty of different Solfeggio recordings that might be the right frequency, but would rub you the wrong way. Frequencies carried by the scalar energy field are more subconscious and non-invasive as they act as energetic information. As such, they can bypass the analytical and critical mechanisms of the cerebral cortex of the brain, communicating directly with your autonomic nervous system and the deep subconscious mind. This allows frequencies to be focused on emotional clearing to work more deeply and effectively, dissolving energetic blockages at their core.

Second is that by using such devices, you can put programs on a loop to get consistent, even continuous input. This enables you to receive Solfeggio frequencies day and night, even during sleep. This is recommended for deeper work, such as dissolving long-standing negative energetic patterns and establishing lasting balance for the body, mind and spirit.

Whether you just use Solfeggio frequencies as background music, or you choose to try them in a more structured protocol, you will certainly experience a new sense of well being at some level.
